Today I wore a snood, hair covering, to work today. Mid morning I was pulled aside and told that I can't wear anything that covers the majority of my hair to work. I am in a clinical setting. I was told it was unprofessional to wear such things without a religious exemption.
This is very disturbing to me, as I frequently wear such items to protect my hair and for other reasons. It was a really stormy day, so I naturally took the precautions to cover my hair, because I knew my hair would be all over the place and frizzy. Imo, the out of control hair seems much more unprofessional to me.
I can handle a uniform, slacks and company shirts, but the regulation on how I can style my hair is crazy to me. My trainer wears crazy bright makeup everyday but doesn't seem to be called unprofessional. I don't wear anything bright or out of line.
What should I do? I agreed to take my snood off today, and to be mindful of what I wear. However, I can't help but wonder how I can approach these people about how I am unhappy with this policy that seems unfair to any non-religious workers who wear head coverings for comfort or cultural reasons.
I think until I figure out how to broach the subject, I think I may wear my wigs on days where my hair isn't cooperating.
