Temping in a hospital ER…

So I’m working weekends at the front desk of a hospital ER. Work is simple, patients come in and we get their details and problems and check them in ready to be seen by a nurse/doctor. That’s fine. However, once this sick/injured/in pain person is in a room one of my responsibilities is to go into that room and ask them to pay their copay. Do patients have the option to be billed? ABSOLUTELY. However, my boss doesn’t want me to word it that way, I’m supposed to ask “how would you like to pay for your ER visit today?” And give them option of cash, card or check. Because otherwise, he says “if we send bills to people there’s a chance they won’t pay and the hospital will lose money” Guy is more worried about the corporate bottom line than the person who just got hit by a car/stabbed…

I’m out of here ASAP.

EDIT: I’m NOT saying that the hospital shouldn’t be paid, of course they need to be paid. I just find it distasteful that I’m going into a trauma room and asking a patient that is still being tended to for money. Can’t we wait until they are discharged?
