This is less about work and bad things that happened, so feel free to delete this if it's not relevant to this subreddit.
When I was in highschool, a friend's dad told me how jobs work and it's helped a lot. I will admit that it took me a few years to actually listen to the advice and try it. He told me that you have to follow the ABC's.
First was to get A job. I first started working at a computer repair shop in the shipping and receiving department that paid $13/hour and was living with my gf and her parents. My job was to take the computers and create a work order in the mornings. In the afternoons I would take the computers that were finished and package them up with shipping labels. It wasn't any fancy job, but it was close to computers which was my passion for many years. It paid some bills and taught me some skills by talking to other employees.
After a little while doing this, I set out to get a Better job. I started working for a recruiting agency where I worked many different jobs and learned many different skills. Some were working in a datacenter, and other working as desktop support at places like LinkedIn. It was nothing fancy, but it paid better and I was able to learn a lot. Sometimes skills gained is more important then the pay itself.
Next was to find a Career. These are what pay you more. I started working full time at a company working in a datacenter where I maintained the servers, including installing and cableing. It paid $25/hour and was easier on the bills. I was still living with my gf and her parents. I worked at this job for 2 years and learned how servers work, as well as sysadmin work. After 2 years, I found a new job that applied those new skills to be an infrastructure engineer. All this time, I applied for hundres of jobs, waiting for someone to take a chance on me. This job pays $45/hour with raises each year and is a great company to work for. I have been with this company for almost 2 years and have taken 6 years to get to this point.
This post isn't to brag, but rather my example of how I applied the ABC's to keep moving forward. I have a lot to learn and will consistently work on as there is more room to grow and move up.
TL;DR:
I was taught the ABC's of jobs. Get A job. Get a Better job. Get a Career. It takes work, but it's well worth it. I hope this helps people grow and find a passion to work towards. Some people, like myself, were never taught these things in school. Much love to everyone.
