Antiwork

The corporations are moving into my industry and totally destroying it.

I work in an industry (international private schooling) that until recently was dominated by “mom and pop” business owners. Pay and conditions were good, the owners were close to their staff and respected them. The business was profitable and workers were well paid. (By well paid, I mean it was possible to save up a meaningful amount of money for yourself, buy a place to live and eventually retire.) Since I started working here, I have seen the changes. More and more giant faceless companies with dubious ownership in offshore tax havens have been moving in, buying out the previous owners. Incredibly, us staff are inline for a pay cut next year, inspite of the +10% inflation rate. Looking for work in other schools the pay rate haven't been increased for the past five years. Since I started working here, I have seen the changes.

I now earn less on an inflation adjusted basis than I made in 2013 when I started work in the industry. Nine years worth of experience later and with additional responsibilities I now earn less than I did as an inexperienced kid who knew nothing. It is hopless, there is no point to continue.

I have also noticed other absurd practices like working staff to the bone on projects which are a complete and total waste of time. I always wondered by big corporations did that, it's just a power play. Although in theory we have a voluntary economic relationship that benefits both parties, that isn't enough for the capitalist, they have to show you who is boss.
