The Hotel Industry is Horrible.

I have worked/been in management for multiple franchised hotels for a big brand for about 12 years and I am absolutely over the entire industry. I would love to hear others opinions and thoughts. The hotel industry will abuse its employees like nothing else. Management is always salaried and expected to work 10 hour days – truly for what? At one point I was running a property for $36k a year. Hourly staff is suppose to just put up with long hours because ownership won’t make any changes to increase hourly wages to entice more staff to be hired. A lot of ownership companies think $13 an hour is fine for housekeeping. Truly insane. You get yelled at from the people you work for and the people you are supposed to be taking care of that are staying at the hotel. You cannot win in any sense. And don’t get…

You get yelled at from the people you work for and the people you are supposed to be taking care of that are staying at the hotel. You cannot win in any sense. And don’t get me started on how people have to started to be since Covid – people are even more insane now.

Owners do not want to put ANY money into properties that are absolutely falling apart and still expect them to get rave reviews and make budget (and if they don’t it’s your head on the chopping block.)

There are so many “leaders” in positions that shouldn’t be due to their complete incompetence which you have to make up for essentially. I have had so many people that were my leaders or leaders that I worked with, that I had to show them how to do things or how things are suppose to be done. Such as my last position – I was a sales manager for two properties and essentially they wanted me to be at the properties 7 days a week because the operations team could simply not handle anything.

You are also on call 24/7 – you always have to be alert and your whole life has to be surrounded by the hotel. And you are always worried about job safety – this industry is not worth it at all.

If anyone has left the industry please tell me what you do now so I can never go back.
