I work with utilities. The specifics are not important but I work in public and wear a yellow vest. This morning I was in a fairly affluent and trendy neighborhood ($2400 for a studio, I was curious) and this mid 20s finance bro looken dude leans out the window of his Italian prick-mobile and yells at me to “get a real job”.
I'm sure he has no idea what I was doing. He has no idea that without me he has no internet, no electricity, no running water, no heating, no cell phone, no traffic lights and no toilet. All he knew was that I was wearing a yellow vest, which means I did not belong in that neighborhood. That me and him were not part of the same.
I couldn't help but spend the rest of the day noticing how un-friendly everyone there was. Some of them seems downright scared of me. Most just dismissed me as part of the background. Not worthy of acknowledgement as a human being.
This is what the rich think of us.
