I think I am being paid less than two fellow coworkers. For context, I work for a government entity. My 2 coworkers and I have the same job title and classification; however, I found out they are being paid for a different, higher job title — this equates to about $2 more per hour for each of them. They are not actually performing the tasks associated with the higher job title or “working out of classification”. One of the coworkers does not possess the necessary license for this other title; the other worker does. I am in a union, but I confess it isn’t very strong and was weakened over the years by management and a corrupt former union president. I don’t even know where to begin here. I am not mad at my coworkers – good on them for getting the extra money – but I definitely feel cheated. Don’t know what to or should do. I can obviously request payroll records and try to make a case, but not sure if it’s even worth it. Also don’t want to cause any potential financial harm to my coworkers — they are good people. Could my employer lower their wage rather than increasing mine? I’m not being discriminated against, so I don’t think it’s necessarily illegal what my employer is doing. Just feels a bit unethical.
