Over a month ago I requested a week off, this week, to welcome my grand daughter into the world and help my daughter and son-in-law out for their first week of baby-ness. I work in a summer tourist destination and in a supervisory position. I have worked for this company for 4 years always taking my vacation time in the off-season. As a supervisor, I have never said no to an employees time off request no matter the time of year because I realize these people have lives that don't revolve around the company and, dammit, they earn their time off!
Well, none of the managers approved my time-off request which started yesterday. They never even mentioned having seen the request and never asked me why I wanted it. I sent a few emails reminding the teams that I was leaving and asking for coverage… no replies.
Sunday evening, I made sure the necessary things that I do were covered by my coworkers, set the out-of-office auto reply on my email, and clocked out. I am now enjoying newborn grandbaby snuggles and sipping coffee. We will see if I have a job next week!
I have learned a lot from this sub and it has been very empowering. I spent most of my adult life compromising my life for work and missed way too much “living” including a lot of what I should have been focusing on for my children. Thanks, antiwork! You have taught this old dog some new tricks!
