Time Sensitive!

Can my HR ask for proof of relationship to a deceased person? She’s requiring the Obit as well. This feels icky. TEXT CONVO: Me: “Hey, we had a family member on ***’s side pass away yesterday afternoon. Her visitation is Friday in * @ 5. Could I work a half day on Friday? I will have to cancel the-blank-unless I can get a text out earlier in the day and get a couple people to come in for it at an earlier time?” HR: “Yes that is fine, you will need to bring in documentation of service and relation to deceased. Sorry for your loss I will cancel the-blank-Friday” Me: “Okay, I am not blood related to her. It’s *****’s brother in law’s grandma. I’ll bring the obit with me, and work a half day. Thank you” HR: “It’s not actually *****’s family.. no relation?” Me: “No, I’m not blood…

Me:
“Okay, I am not blood related to her. It’s *****’s brother in law’s grandma.
I’ll bring the obit with me, and work a half day. Thank you”

HR:
“It’s not actually *****’s family.. no relation?”

Me:
“No, I’m not blood related. Neither is *****”

HR:
“I can’t justify approving the absence. You can switch days and work either Thursday or Saturday. If that helps, just let me know. Thanks”
