To other non-profit folks, why is it like this??

Ive gotta vent a bit. I’ve been on this thread for a while and feel lucky that I have work that feels important. I know a lot of folks here actually hate their job, but I am a veterinarian at public health non-profit and couldn’t have found a more ideal early career position. On top of this, my immediate supervisor is stellar and a great professional mentor. BUT, I am a contractor and the finance MFers suck! First off, I have an additional masters degree directly relevant to this work. From it, I can do shit that few DVMs can do, just because it is niche, not because its oh so special, so I support research. BUT, I am a contractor and the finance MFers suck!

First off, I have an additional masters degree directly relevant to this work. From it, I can do shit that few DVMs can do, just because it is niche, not because its oh so special, so I support research. And I am the only (ONLY) one at the org with an up to date veterinary medical and DEA license, which cost me 200k in vet school to have the credentials to attain. This is a well funded non profit.

Second, they are trying to switch my contract from hourly to daily even though in the field my days are around 12 hrs regularly. I travel for like 5 weeks at a time to remote areas of low socioeconomic countries. What’s the point of contracting without insurance and benefits if you literally donate time after working your 8 hours?

Third, they rely on me to personally purchase pay for so much to not reimburse me for MONTHS. Currently they owe me 7k of overdue invoices and 8k of overdue reimbursements. I put in a 5% compounded late payment fee in my next contract. They probably won’t notice it and fuss when I bill them for it.

Fourth, it takes 12 people to do anything related to logistics and they try to act like they don’t have enough time to do anything when nits never clear who does what! I mean I don’t hate the staff because I know they are also getting underpaid but god it feels like freaking Protestants vs Catholics with the other staff sometimes – like we on the same team!

It’s just an insanely inefficient organization. I know you may wonder why I’m even staying. I’m sticking with it because I know my supervisor supports me and I love the actual job part, but GOD does.
