I was working as an independent contractor for a company doing their national events marketing. A week before the events began (after asking them to confirm flight and hotel information for two weeks) they switched up on me and said I need to interview with HR. For a full time events manager role. News to me! I chose independent contract work because I also run my own painting business and do other things I enjoy for work. Like other events and Acting/commercials work.
I said okay, maybe it will be do-able if I fly out for events during the weekend . I specifically asked about office hours. I explained i just moved to the city and haven’t invested in a car, I didn’t need one. They told me office will be required 1-2 days a week when we don’t have events. Cool Uber is doable even though it’s 30 minute commute to the office.
After doing the entire interview process (missing 3 events I saved the date for them ) they send me an offer letter stating 1-2 times in office. I felt there was some confusion and miscommunication. Something didn’t feel right so I called who I would be reporting to, to get some clarity . It was clear she needed me in office for creative strategy more then 2 times a week.
I go back to HR one more time since she wrote 1-2 days on my contract.
Turns out she emailed back saying, yes you would be required to come in 5 days a week.
So basically they wasted my time and screwed me on a month of events. I’m not mad, I feel
Empowered being able to stand my ground here. Picked up 5 events immediately after .
Corporate is weird and can eat my shorts!
