Unpaid wages as 1099 in FL

So I worked as a 1099 for a company that decided to not accept my work, accused me of fraud as the reasoning, didn’t return my work, and didn’t pay me for $2k+ of work. I’m seething and in financial distress (eviction notice looming and possible car repossession..) because of this so my first thought was to sue. A labor attorney firm did an intake with me but then refused the case. No reason given, I’m thinking maybe because of the amount? I looked at taking them to small claims court but this person already has a public child support judgement and I have a feeling I wouldn’t see the money even if I did win. I don’t know. Not to mention the $175 to file. My next thought was to contact FL DOL which apparently doesn’t even exist (I haven’t lived here long and have kind of gotten stuck)…

Anyway then I was looking at a US DOL complaint. Is this really my best shot at getting paid? I feel a bit naive. Any guidance is seriously appreciated – this company is vile and may have stolen my work altogether.
