Upper management wants me to fire longtime friend. I don’t want to

I have no idea what to do or how to go about this. I have a management position with the company that I work for. I really don’t like being a manager, but the money is better than I have ever made in my life, so I do my best to do my job the way upper management wants me to, but also, I do my best to be empathetic to my coworkers needs, and not be an asshole manager. I don’t want to be a bootlicking piece of shit and I have no intention of kissing upper managements ass just to get ahead. Today they told me that I have to fire one of my best friends, who I got the job, and I have to do it on Monday. I have no idea what to do or how to go about this. I have a management position with the company that I work for. There is another manager that is a level above me who can do it, they even said he’d be there, but they think it’ll go smoother if I do it. I don’t really know what I’m asking for, except for maybe a good way to get out of this? I don’t want to lose a friend of over twenty years over this shit. This decision didn’t even come from me.
