Walked out of a job for the first time today

I was employed part-time as an admin assistant and worked 7 shifts over the past 3.5 weeks. There were only 4 of us on staff: boss, myself, another part-timer who had been there about a week longer than me, and a full-time employee who had been there over 8 years. This job had already been giving me intense anxiety to the point where I'd be physically ill the day before and/or morning of my shifts. For a little background, I've been looking for a relatively low-stress part-time job to make some money while I finish my BA dual degree and study for the GRE. I ended up being given way more executive work beyond the functions of an admin assistant and was expected to keep up with emails and alerts on my days off so I'd be “ready to devote my full 8 hours to staying focused and being productive”…

This job had already been giving me intense anxiety to the point where I'd be physically ill the day before and/or morning of my shifts. For a little background, I've been looking for a relatively low-stress part-time job to make some money while I finish my BA dual degree and study for the GRE. I ended up being given way more executive work beyond the functions of an admin assistant and was expected to keep up with emails and alerts on my days off so I'd be “ready to devote my full 8 hours to staying focused and being productive” while I'm in the office. I started looking for another job after my third shift.

This morning, the other part-timer and I listened as boss screamed at the full-time employee over the phone for over 10 minutes for no reason at all (we later found out from a few different people in the shared office space that he frequently takes his personal stress out on his employees) and then suspended her pay indefinitely when she calmly told him she didn't appreciate being yelled at.

So I resigned immediately (which I've never done before, I've always given at least two weeks notice). Five minutes later, so did the other part-time employee. And now the full-time employee told us she's drafting her letter of resignation. He's going to be completely unstaffed by the end of the week with a huge fundraising event in the middle of the month.

As my former co-worker put it, no job is worth sacrificing one's mental and physical health. I don't know how this will affect the company or the boss, but I don't really care. I just hope, no matter how slim the possibility is, that he realized today he can't treat his employees like punching bags and still expect the best from them.
