Hi all,
I (and a couple coworkers) would like to unionize our workplace. We are located in BC, Canada.
The company we work for is a Not for Profit that the CEO and COO are profiting off of.
The rest of us make an average of 20% less than the average salary for our jobs in our city. The COO of our organization recently attempted to get all the salaried workers to sign an “employee pamphlet” that goes against multiple laws outlined in our province’s employment standards act.
Most recently a longtime coworker was terminated without cause following a dispute about him being given paternity leave. That’s a side note for context.
It has been kept intentionally muddy as to who is employed under which terms, with many employed as contractors and some salaried.
The organization is an academy. The teachers are contracted and pay the not for profit a portion of their earnings in exchange for use of the space, and for having us organize their lessons, etc. This NFP school runs kind of like an agency with the instructors. Some instructors also have an additional job with our organization and are also on salary. The office workers and facility manager are salaried.
Who do we need to be on board for a unionization of the salaried workers? And what about the contracting instructors?
