We got trees instead of raises

Throwaway account because reasons. Normally we would've had our wage discussions much sooner but our new holding company can't seem to understand that at our type of job it is impossible to have these in December. Anyways, when I had the discussion with my boss she just straight up told me “we can't talk about your raise right now, as (holding company) still hasn't made the budget for the new year. Fast forward to holding companies “tHAnK yOu!!.!!!.!!” meeting, which was more of an update on current projects and a strategy show and tell thing instead of showing appreciation for us, but sure.

They bought us tree certificates. Tree. Certificates.
I get that it's a good environmental thing to plant +400 trees in Uganda, but I can't understand how they thought it would be a good idea to tell us that they don't know how much raise (if any) we will get and at the same time blow out money like that.
