We do have to remember that when our parents grew up their parents were raising four kids in a 900 square foot house whereas I currently live in an 1800 square foot house with me, my spouse and our dog. We didn't have the added luxuries of technological devices and high-end new vehicles.
So as time is going on, our standards of living have drastically increased just due to the luxury aspect that our parents did not have. But because of this we're stealing from other areas and putting higher requirements in that because lifestyle has drastically increased for the general population that one income is not sufficient enough to support all of that.
When my parents grew up they almost never went out to eat, their vacations involved driving in a car somewhere and staying at a very cheap hotel once or twice a decade. You bought cars but you also had knowledge to work on yourself so you didn't have to pay mechanic to fix them.
So while we still need to improve the minimum quality of living in the United States where even the lowest paying jobs can still support your ability to feed yourself to afford your own residence at least an apartment without spraying with roommates, benefits, retirement, savings etc we do have to acknowledge the fact that we're demanding a higher lifestyle significantly higher than decades ago while also being upset that that kind of lifestyle deems more income.
