I work at a fast food restaurant like McDonalds, and usually during closing and overnight shifts, there are only 3-4 people in the store after 10 pm (The shift manager, one front, and two back)
The store owner purposely understaffs people during that time as in her own words, “Kids are cheaper to pay”. Its usually mostly managable as weekdays are quiet enough, but today there was a sports game and the store got crazy at about 9 pm. A round of about 50 people came in the store, 5 cars at drive through, and at least 10-15 deliveries simultaneously while the store only had 4 people.
During this time, a customer got into an argument with the shift manager and I was left doing front counter all by myself while handling drive through at the same time and about 7 angry uber drivers yelling at me. Worst part? orders in the system time out after 15 minutes, and you're timed by the second in drive through.
By the end, the shift manager was cursing under his breath, said this was a job meant for at least 7 people and we just did over a thousand orders in under two hours. He then told me that the store owner had plans to cut down even more as she thinks 4 is “too much”. He looked into the system and said we did over a thousand orders in two hours just by ourselves. If I didnt stay behind to help, it would have just been him and another person closing the entire store.
Cherry on top? Shift manager then shared that the store owner had plans to cut down even more as she thinks 4 is “too much”. Fuck this job.
Edit: I need to confirm if the numbers he mentioned in the system are correct as in hindsight, it might have been the total orders for that day or the profit during that rush. I wasn't able to double check as we all crashed after the shift and emotions were high, but I will definitely do so soon.
