During the pandemic my job was reassigned. Basically my department stopped paying for IT to work on our customer service tickets. They plucked one person from each sub department and internalized customer support. My four teammates and I became the five subject matter experts and the new internal customer service team. Our new team saved the department 40k per month. Been doing this new job since June 2020. We have our ups and down. Our trials and tribulations. Overall, I still did the job I was hired for and learned the skills of the other three teams (I had knowledge in my field and one other persons field. So he and I only had to learn the other three’s roles) and I did get a nice pay bump because our team’s manager saw how grossly underpaid I was.
The hiring freeze lifted June 2021. My team and I were told that we would get promoted due to our cross training. Basically due to our new knowledge and roll we earned a promotion. Now that the hiring freeze was over, we were able to get the ball rolling and start the process for getting our title changes and pay raises.
However, our manager who is amazing and a big advocate, was forced to no longer be our manager. Political bull outside of our control. She was the only one fighting for our promotions. Before she was made to no longer be our manager, she did force one promotion. I do believe she regrets not forcing the other four of us to get our title change at the same time.
Since June 2021 when the hiring freeze lifted and since December 2021 when our new manager took over, I’ve been waiting and waiting for my promotion. Every time I have my 1:1 with my new manager I ask for a status update and it’s the same bull every time. My manager even told me that the ticket with HR to get our paperwork updated was closed with no resolution. Of course I asked her why the ticket wasn’t reopened. No reply or follow up there.
Well. A new employee has gotten the title change I been waiting for. This new employee was hired as a 2 only five months ago. Now five months later she is a 3. I’ve been waiting to become a 3 since June 2021.
How do I bring this up to my manger now? I don’t want to sound entitled because I earned becoming a 3 for over two years. I have now seen four people (one person I even trained and she was brought on after me, and now this new person who joined the department five months ago) become a 3 before me. In my next 1:1 I want to point out that this new person has gone from a 2 to a 3 and she’s barely been on the job for five months. I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve it. I am sure if she got the promotion in a short time it’s because she earned it. That doesn’t reduce the fact that I also earned my promotion.
One thing I do want to point out and it may make a difference. My teams promotions is suppose to be interview free. I forgot the exact work around, but essentially HR is suppose to add the same paragraph to our job descriptions. This allows us to get promoted without having to do interviews. This was the ticket that was closed. HR never added the paragraph and then closed the ticket.
The person who has been on for five months. She interviewed for the position. However, I can’t interview for that position because while it’s for the same title I want, it is under a different manager for a different team.
I already asked/told my manager several times that I will interview for my own position. But that doesn’t appear to have any movement.
My next 1:1 is next week. I want to be prepared to have another conversation about it.
