What happened in this interview?

I sat through four interviews recently for an upper management position at a company — each interviewer seemed extremely stressed and talked about the difficulties of the current situation at the company. I can’t understand why they would do that? Do they prefer I not take the job? Maybe the person that recommended me isn’t cooperative with them? Maybe they are interviewing a person they think might challenge them or their ideas about the situation after being hired? If I do get an offer, no doubt I counteroffer for more pay and a higher title. Any thoughts?
