What is with parents and making their children get a low paying summer job rather then just letting the enjoy their summer?

I understand for families who might need that extra bit of money but there so many including mine that forced me to get a job at 16/17. Like I have my entire life to work can I not just enjoy a summer or 2 of doing nothing? Appreciate the boomer mindset of trying to make everyone else miserable.
