14 months ago, I applied for a job as a director. Was offered a manager position + sign on bonus with the intent of being reconsided for the director role after my 1 year mark. Total comp was essentially a lateral move for me but I opted to accept the position due to the potential career growth
Fast forward a year later, I have not received any additional bonuses other than the sign on bonus and was never reconsidered for the director role. I have outstanding reviews from all the teams I've worked with and my performance is not in question
About 2 months ago, I've open the discussion with my boss asking for a bonus structure and to be reconsidered for a director role. We left off with him reaching out to HR for my bonus structure. However, for the Director role there wasn't any knowledge of this and apparently the internal hiring manager lied. So he was going to look into a “senior” manager promotion for me instead which is the step before director
Today, I received an update. I was told the following: My salary is higher than most in my position within the company so they are unwilling to provide me with a yearly bonus structure. Also, I need to work towards the senior manager role since I don't currently fit the job requirements. What are the job requirements? You need to have 10+ direct reports and I currently have 4. So in summary, I was denied a promotion due to reasons out of my control. I ended the conversation with my boss notifying him that I am no longer motivated and unhappy.
TLDR: denied both a bonus structure and a promotion.
