I was over in r/digitalnomads earlier and found myself being harassed by a few folks (they deleted their comments) who couldn’t believe that I simply “hate working”.
They think I haven’t found “meaningful work”, and would be bored without work. They assumed I hate my job and life, that I must not exercise (weird assumption). One tech douche even posted about how “men” need meaningful jobs and it goes back to cave men (he wasn’t sure about women).
I love my life and like my job. I’m good at my job and it affords me a fun, flexible lifestyle. It stops there though. Working is a means to an end for me. If I was able to never work again, the answer is automatic.
99.9% of people on this planet don’t have the privilege to even consider “meaningful work”. They’re out here trying to survive. I can’t even imagine what meaningful work would be for me. I have no professional goals other than doing my best to stop working as soon as possible.
My blood runs cold at the thought of infecting my many hobbies and interests with measurables like monetization and success.
Who are these lobbyists of late stage capitalism out here trying to convince us that without work there is only boredom? Their examples of this being anecdotal stories of rich aristocrats and tech bros who “sold their product for fuck you money only to be bored within months so they went back to work”. Who convinced them to believe this?
