When your employer says they care but back out of that when you need their understanding.

I work in a hospital. When we have big snow storms coming they will send out an email. They tell us to be safe traveling to and from work. “You are important to us”. They offer us to stay over night and sleep on an available bed if we have any to begin with. I can’t. I have kids at home. We had a snow storm by Christmas. I couldn’t leave my house. My car was iced to the curb and our road hadn’t been plowed or salted. On top of that I have to take hills to get there. I unfortunately don’t have a car made for them and 99% of the time can’t get up them if they are covered. If I was a medical professional I would have definitely tried harder. I do registration. Half of my dept was snowed in. After telling my boss I couldn’t…

After telling my boss I couldn’t get out me and some others in my dept got a group text saying if we can try to get there they need us. To which she added where she was from and said “I made it here in 20 minutes”. I seriously wanted to say good for you. Some of us live in a part of the city where it is not safe to drive and I’m not risking my life to get there. I stayed silent in the group though. This is on top of my supervisor being more upset over the way I looked after a major car accident. I was in an accident and my car was completely totaled. I ended up with a very noticeable black eye, a busted lip, I had injured one of my feet (it wasn’t broken but still hard to walk on), I had the seatbelt bruise, my left had was severely injured, and the back of my right arm was bruised. I got my hand and arm xrayed because they were afraid they were broken. No breaks. Just big bruises. And a cut on my left hand. When I came back I still had my bruises and black eye. They asked if I could wear some stuff to make it not so visible. I said I don’t wear make up and my eye is sensitive to the touch in the first place. They said they just don’t want to scare any patients. I came to work anyways. I didn’t care. Both these incidences have made me re think my employment. That my well-being actually really means nothing when it comes time for them to “care”. Sorry that was a rant.
