Why are some jobs so keen to pay workers lower wages? Are these high street shops closing down a sign of things to come…

Where I am (UK), so many well-known retail establishments and high street chains have closed down for good recently. It got me thinking, is it because they're struggling to find workers as they don't want to work for minimum wage? Is it because the jobs themselves have had to increase the per hour salary in comparison to pre-pandemic levels? And they would much rather the salary go back down to, say, £7 per hr, because they can't handle it? Thoughts?
