Why can’t humanity see that scientific and technological progress is absurd if we keep working an enormous amount of hours every day?

I've been thinking about this for a while now, and I can't help but wonder why we as a society don't realize that all the scientific and technological progress we've made is meaningless if we continue to work long hours every day. We've made incredible advancements in medicine, transportation, communication, and so much more, but what's the point if we don't have the time to enjoy them being modern slaves?
