Why do they prefer me to stay when there is nothing more to do?

I have recently started working as a nurse at a day time clinic. Most of the other nurses are 20-35 years older than me, so maybe there is also some generational differences in how we view work. I do everything I am meant to when I am at work. Today I had done everything, I had cleaned and closed everything for the day, I asked if there was something more I could do and there wasn’t. One nurse had a call to make, but it was nothing I could help with. There was also no ‘risk’ of another patient coming in since we had closed the place for the day. So half an hour before I was off I asked to leave early because I had nothing to do. Got a long lecture about what kind of nurse I want to be, but in the end she let me go.…

Got a long lecture about what kind of nurse I want to be, but in the end she let me go. Talking about maybe I should write it down so they can cut it for my pay, but I can leave it be if I work overtime sometimes and don’t write that down.

My contract says I am working 32h per week and paid for 32h. More if I have overtime ofc.

But I don’t get the point of them prefering me to sit there and do nothing than going home? Being efficient should get you punished? Maybe I should have more coffee breaks and delay tasks more so I can have overtime too…

I care about giving my patients the best treatment. Not about giving 10% extra for my boss they don’t pay me enough for that. I have a life outside of work.
