Why do we have to leave a job on good terms but they can fire us at will

I see a lot of posts worrying about putting in two weeks notice and burning bridges. My job just laid off a bunch of people, including an older woman who was close to retirement age which broke my heart. I don’t they’re worried about burning bridges or even if we end up homeless. Fuck these jobs
