Why is it alright that positions can ask you to put on a talent show for them before they have even interviewed you?

Had a interview for a apprentice position. Spoke to the recruiter and it seemed like a good role. “Oh btw they want you to complete a task for them for two days from now, make a piece of media explaining why you want the job.” I really wanted this position so I went and made the media, no idea how long others were given for this task, my 2 days of allnighters might have been compared to someones two months. Handed in the work and got a phone call “brilliant your through to the top 10, there were 200 applicants and its been narrowed down to 10. You have a week to create a presentation to give on your interview on how you would launch a product for the company” So at this point I spend all week working on this presentation, I write a 20 page presentation, fully researched…

I really wanted this position so I went and made the media, no idea how long others were given for this task, my 2 days of allnighters might have been compared to someones two months.

Handed in the work and got a phone call “brilliant your through to the top 10, there were 200 applicants and its been narrowed down to 10. You have a week to create a presentation to give on your interview on how you would launch a product for the company”

So at this point I spend all week working on this presentation, I write a 20 page presentation, fully researched based off of doing a project management analysis.

I have the interview and it goes great. Week passes, “oh you didn't get to the next interview stage, we just don't think you would fit with our company culture.”

Its seems like after meeting me they decided my face didn't fit and regardless of talent I wasn't going to get the job. My question is, why is it alright for a company to expect so much upfront work from the potential employees without first thinning the group with an interview to make sure the job is actually right for you?

I've had jobs in the past were you first have a interview to make sure your suitable then a time alloted test to compare candidates which is fine. These generic open tasks I got with a mix of incredibly short and very long timelines without guidelines as to how much time and effort should be spend on them seemed designed to waste time.

Secondly I've had an apprenticeship role in the past that the manager created because she wanted to get her boyfriend a job there and claim government funding towards paying him but I was too talented that her manager stepped in and they gave us both the role until they found a reason to fire me. so I how do I know if this was basically a song and a dance wasting everyones time so the ceos son or something can get the position?
