Why should I go to an in-person interview 4 hours away on short notice? (Vent)

So I was VERY excited about this really cool job opportunity to interview for that would really help me in a lot of ways (career projection, increase financial stability, finally moving back to where I want to live, etc). I make 44k now with awful benefits (have a masters degree in social work) this job would pay 85k. However, here’s the kicker…. The one supervisor gave me a call back saying the interview would be in person, which confused me because all my interviews last fall were virtual. I told her I live 4 hours away. I also had sent her an email a half hour prior saying mornings are the worst time for me and afternoon works better (I run group therapy sessions all morning, we are short staffed and it’s hard to cover that sometimes). And on the phone she stated “so I saw mornings are better for you.” …I said the OPPOSITE.

Anyways, she has to ask her supervisor if they will allow me to do virtual. Which she can’t find out for me until Monday…the day before the interview is suppose to take place (Tuesday or Wednesday). And look, I can’t just pick up and leave my job with no notice, to drive 4 hours, for a job I might not get. I don’t have enough leave to do that every time I have a job interview. It’s just frustrating all around.

TLDR: the job to interview for pays 85k and I get paid 44k, interview is 4 hours away, I won’t know if they can do a virtual interview until the day before the interview. If they can’t do virtual it is impossible for to go there with that short of notice with the little PTO I have.
