I work evening shift at a hospital and yeah, I get it: it’s a 24/7/365 kinda gig and I chose to work there.
But I have a coworker who’s mom is in failing health and wants to spend Christmas with her, so I agreed to pick up her shift, reminding myself that at least I’d be getting time and a half.
Today I was informed that because Christmas is on a Sunday and the federal observance of Christmas is actually Monday, 12/26, people who work MONDAY will get holiday pay for heroically sacrificing their…Boxing Day? time with their families. Apparently actually working on the day doesn’t count.
And the best news is, I was already scheduled to work New Year’s Eve and day so it’s going to be the exact same situation the following week. I will be working two major holidays in a row without holiday pay. It doesn’t feel legal.
