I’ve been working online for the past 5 years for an Australian company, before that I lived in the U.S and over 40 hours means you’re getting paid overtime.
So my online job has gotten bad lately so I applied for a call center, that services American clients, so English is a must.
This is in Honduras by the way.
I had a video interview and everything was going well, up until the moment he asked me if I was willing to work weekends, I said sure, of course, and just to be sure, I asked “this involves overtime pay right?” To which he replied “No, its for the same pay”.
I think I did like 5 or 6 funny faces, and the words “exploitation” and “slave labor” crossed through my mind. I’m sure the guy noticed my faces and I was having a hard time thinking what to say.
It was a fixed pay of something like $600 a month, so every hour after 40 hours a week is just free labor, it was already a massive drop from what I was making online, but I was willing to budge, do to the unfortunate bad economy the world is experiencing right now, but they killed me with that free labor bullshit.
It was also a sales position but there was no commission.
This is Honduras, after living in the U.S and then working online for years getting paid for my time worked, this was the first time I tried applying for a job in my country and it did not go well.
Needless to say, I never heard back from them. I’m pretty sure this would’ve been a dream job for someone who grew up here and is used to that kind of environment but that did not sit well with me.
I’m still online job searching.
