When I was 18 I finally got a higher paying job at my first big corporation (healthcare related). I worked there for 3 years till I decided to move on to something better. I gave my two weeks and a formally written resignation letter. My immediate supervisor was saddened to see me go, while none of the other managers even acknowledged I was leaving.
Two days before the end of my two weeks, the upper manager pulls me into her office..”what could we do to make you stay?” I was honest and told them that I was leaving for better hours and more money. It was also closer to home. However, I worked with an amazing team of people. I was the youngest and everyone took me under their wing as one of their own. If I could stay, I would think about it. The manager said “I'll see what I can do”.
I returned to my team, who all knew the upper manager had just pulled me into their office. I told them “they said they will see what they can do”. That was it. I knew as little info as they did. The next day the manager pulled me in again and said “There's nothing I can do for you since you discussed pay with your team, which is against company policy”. I was shocked. I wish I would've known that it wasn't a crime to do that, even though I hadn't. Everyone on the team knew I already made the least. I was young and had no college degree. The manager gave me a dead-pan look and just waited for me to get up and leave.
I did leave. I went back to my desk and left. I didn't come back to finish out the remainder of my time. I left there thinking I was the one who fucked up by saying those few words to my team.
