Hello all! I lurk on this sub often. I want to leave retail by the time I hit my 30s, I know as a woman with a disability I have limits and try to show that I can overcome obstacles but…it's becoming mentally and physically draining. is there a way to get say…a data entry position without a degree? Or are there other jobs with minimal human interaction I can get into? I'm willing to get myself a laptop (finally) and learn. I have been in a cycle of getting retail jobs over the years and even tho the pay is better than the last place I worked, I seriously feel that retail can be soul crushing even if the environment is better than another store. I know my limits, I am a 113lbs woman, I temporarily worked warehouses and yeah the pay was ok but my body was strained…
Month: April 2022
When did this begin?
When did the idea begin that it was the employee's job to find a replacement if one is sick or has an urgent need? I understand on the routine level, that makes sense, if I'm scheduled and I want to take a day off for some other reason, I would find a replacement. But for illness etc, that seems just insane and should be illegal.
Lol. What even is this life anymore? At this point I'm not sure if I'm laughing or crying but I guess I'm happy I don't have to drive an hour to work every day anymore.
I was working a summer job in high school at a frozen yogurt shop and notified my manager that I would need a few days off to get my wisdom teeth out. This was not a very invasive surgery and people get it all the time so I thought that asking for two days off would be enough. After the first day, my body started to reject the painkillers I was taking and I was in some of the worst pain of my life. My face was swollen and bruised and I could barely talk. I contacted everyone on the staff asking if someone could fill my upcoming shift. No one was available. I called my manager in tears telling her I would need an extra day off. She told me that unless I could find someone to fill in that I would need to work. I ended up having…
Payday today! Nobody got paid.
I’m calling the department of labor shortly. We were told it was a “bank glitch” and we are getting paid Monday or Tuesday. Someone already called the bank the company uses and they had no idea about any glitches or outages. Everyone is mad but nobody else is willing to complain to the authorities. I’m gonna pass out the number just in case.
“Monthly bonuses based on performance”
I work in an industry where it's normal to be given incentives to bring in more business and make more profitable deals. It is very sales driven and negotiations happen on a daily basis. It makes sense to have pay tied to what you bring in and it would frankly be stupid not to do things that way. I left a job where I was making commission on a percentage of net revenue for the same role at a different company but they did “monthly bonuses based on the success of the company”. I made the change for personal reasons. When interviewing for this new job I mentioned with my base + commission I made around $80k a year. The new job was a base of $60k + monthly bonuses. My new boss said that I could make more then $80k or I could make less and it was hard…
I work in support and take chat requests and handle some internal ticket requests. My manager was looking at individual performance and hinted to me that I've only been picking up the easy tickets because I can solve most of them in the same day whereas my coworkers take a lot longer on their tickets. I'm not trying to throw shade, my coworkers are smart, but I was a software dev for a decade before taking this job so when I get a ticket, especially if it's related to code, I can debug that shit pretty quick. If my manager thinks I'm only taking the easy tickets, all they're doing is encouraging me to play dumb and take my time resolving tickets. I'm only working 20 hour weeks now but I guess I'm dropping it down to 10 hours if they think I'm being too efficient.
I currently work an 8-5 office job only a couple of minutes from my home. I accepted the job due to the little travel and the set hours, meaning I can have a pretty healthy work and life balance despite the 40 hour weeks – something I couldn’t always find when working varied shifts in retail etc. Today my boss wanted a quick chat and they seemed annoyed that I show up at 7:59am and I leave at 5pm. I always make sure my work is done in time. The issue, as with many companies, is that they have too much of a workload and too little staff. With the three staff in my office, we always manage to get the work done, but lately they’ve been pinching one of our staff to help out with another understaffed department, leaving two of us to do three peoples work. My other…
