I went for an interview this morning at a new construction company a few towns over. The two guys interviewing me immediately share how desperate they are for people. They make it clear that I’ll be offered the job just based off my qualifications and experience alone. I asked about pay and he said 15 an hour. I laughed out loud and told him my minimum, which is completely reasonable based on my years in the industry. He said no I cant do any more than 15. I stood up and said good luck finding people to work for that and walked out. Fuck them. I'm not working any shit job where some assholes get rich, some get to abuse people and most suffer. We had a fire at work and it caused us to be closed from sunday-tuesday. I worked all three days, and sundays are my “big” days where I make the most. My paycheck is gonna be fucked bc of those three days. Its the owners fault bc he refused to get his breaker panel fixed when he knew it waa faulty. So does my employer owe us compensation for those days?? Im from wisconsin too btw.
Ultimately, I’d like to be a successful freelance writer. Ghostwriting attracts me as well. I currently am in a situation where I can figure out how to get into this space (I’m in a two income household, I also do delivery gig work like DoorDash and Instacart). I have examples of essays from college and and I have a couple creative short stories. That’s about it. It’s not a robust portfolio. I was hoping to get practice while doing actual work. I’ve always considered myself a writer, and it’s something that feels natural to me. Right now, I’ve been bidding at the lowest wage asked for and personalizing my cover letters. I haven’t written up a resume, just have my small portfolio. I’ve been bidding for insanely easy entry level stuff like rewriting documents, data entry, etc. I’ve put in about 10 bids now.
