I'm 17 years old and working my first job at a pizza place to save money for college. I agreed in writing a few weeks ago that I'd be available to work until the 12th of August, but due to a terrible work environment I've decided I don't want to put myself through it anymore. I'm not sure how to explain this to my employers, and I'm worried that they'll consider me unprofessional and I'll lose their reference for future jobs. Is there a right way to do this?

So basically I have a job that I work mostly weekends and some weekdays (I’m a broke college student) and our shifts are always posted at least two weeks in advance online through our time clock system. I had no shifts for this weekend, which I was fine with as I’m pretty stressed and need time to do homework. However later on in the evening yesterday I noticed I got a bunch of calls and texts from one of my managers. The texts were telling me I was supposed to be to work at 4, I was confused and sent her a screenshot of my schedule to show her how no shifts were shown for me this weekend. This particular manager was pretty understanding. I later on get a text from the general manager telling me I’m fired for a “No Call No Show” I asked why and the said…
I’m a Brazilian immigrant living in Canada; the last time I saw my mom was in November 2020. Now, I’ve received the news she’ll have to undergo a high-risk emergency surgery (cancer). I asked the company for three-week unpaid time off to go to Brazil to be with her, and they refused. Allegedly, they need “all hands on deck” at this moment (which is kind of true because of some internal changes that are overworking everybody at the company). The problem is that the company has an internal policy of not posting the job opening before the person leaves. Once, a former employee gave them five-week notice, and they could only post the job opening once they left. The company took three months to fill the position and another two weeks to train the recently hired. So, if they need “all hands on deck,” it’d be faster to let me…
So I've recently dealt with a group interview between my flatmate, Australian unemployment systems, and a potential employer. Unemployment wanted my flatmate working for this employer for minimum wage(21.38). Assuming a 40 hr week this wouldn't cover his rent, food, his share of utilities, etc when unemployment does. He had argued this with previous potential employers and the AU unemployment systems in a previous meeting. Their reply: “live somewhere cheaper.” This time round I show up along side him as a “support person.” I break down the fact that he's paying 30 AUD per week LESS than what market rent is for the region, and “living somewhere cheaper” entails fucking off about 500km in any direction. Fuck this capitalist hellscape of a world, and that's coming from the kind of bastard who played the investment game, “won” and can “live comfortably” within it.
So he works for this lil business in our town, they bake cakes, work as a cafe etc. They pay him from 10-4 but they expect him there working 20 mins early. Then if they have a lot to do, he has to stay behind and help for free since “we can't afford to pay you” work sucks man, bad business practices are predatory and they pretend to be his family
