Month: July 2022
I’m leaving my current job. Finally.
I work for a local school in their internal IT department. Because this is the education sector, pay is piss poor. However, it wasn't until a few months ago I realised how under payed we all were. My job title is second line support, which in the UK has an average pay of around £27,000 per year. Not great but not terrible. I am currently getting paid far far less than that. I have asked twice for a raise in the last few months, but nothing has come about it. My direct boss isn't a bad person, can be a bit difficult to work with. When I asked for a raise he said “We'll start an interim employee review soon and get this going for you”. I emailed the following week to say shall we get this started. No reply. On top of this they provide me with no basic…
I only found out a week ago, but apparently my janitor job is saying I need to use 1099 for taxes and are saying I'm an independent contractor. Except by all legal definitions I am treated like an employee. I don't bring my own equipment, I don't set hours, my company sets my pay rate, my company gives me a sheet with what work I do… For my context about my job, I got it through a program for those with mental disabilities (I'm classified as learning disabled and was having a hard time finding a job). I work at a business park which is owned by the company that has the program I used. (I would give more details but I don't wanna dox myself) Said company is a non profit organization. I have a job coach(part of the program) a supervisor and a manager. The manager and supervisor…
Why is hiring process so slow rn?
I've noticed everything is still backed up and slow when it comes to the hiring process. Don't expect to hear back at all for a few weeks kind of thing. At my healthcare org it's like that especially. Is it just because there's too many spots to fill and worker shortage in general so everything is backed up? Genuinely asking bc I'm curious what's going on behind the scenes
So you want to talk about race, Ijeoma Oluo [p102-103]. My teammate Terrence, who had trained me… had been with the company about three years longer than I had. He was a hard-working black man, with a wife and three kids at home. One day I showed up to work and his usually cheerful demeanour had gone. In fact, he looked like he was going to cry… He explained that he had been offered another job at a rival company. He didn’t want to leave, but his family really needed the increase in pay that had been offered. He had told our manager about his predicament, and our manager and director had agreed to match the hourly wage that the competitor had offered. Terrence turned down the job with the competitor, happy to stay at the company that he’d been with for years. But that morning, our director and manager…
Gonna be the BOSS, what should I change?
It is happening fellow anti-workers!!! After 16 years with this place working every position since I was 20 yo, started digging literal trenches for $10/hr., I was offered the GM position. Full control! I need your help!!! This is what I got so far. Day 1: Everybody gets a raise!!! Already got with HR about it. Been in the trenches with all my people for years and they deserve it. Had a guy leave recently because he couldn’t pay the rent. That shit is unacceptable! Day 2: Raising the starting pay of all positions! If you want good people to do a good job, FUCKING PAY THEM!!! Greed is not the way. Share the wealth. Happy employees are more productive when they don’t stress as much about bills. Been thinking about more things like covering health insurance premiums, profit sharing, better Holiday bonuses, more vacation/personal time, etc. What else should…
