I thought I had seen it all
Hi! Employee at a small company (~15 employees) in MD. Upon hire I was required to sign the employee handbook. The first page of the handbook states: “This handbook is intended only to outline the employment policies, procedures and benefits of [The Company]. This manual is not intended to be all- inclusive and should not be considered to be an employment contract. [The Company] reserves the right to change employment policies, procedures, benefits or this manual at any time without notice. It is the responsibility of the employee to stay abreast of policy. [The Company] will make every effort to notify employees of any policy changes, additions or deletions. Said changes will immediately become a part of this manual. OUR COMPANY IS AN AT-WILL EMPLOYER. THIS MEANS THAT REGARDLESS OF ANY PROVISION IN THIS EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK, EITHER YOU OR THE COMPANY MAY TERMINATE THE EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP AT ANY TIME, FOR…
When I first got the job, the pay was $10/hr for 40/hr work week and there was an annual $75 for parking that was deducted from either the first paycheck or during the year in smaller amounts. Employees have since protested (we actually went out with signs and picketed for $15/hr. The office considered, but only gave us $1.25 instead. That was in June. Well…guess what…not long after getting our raise, they sent out flyers for each employee a week ago, saying that the parking fee was going up from previous $75 to $160. So they gave us a raise, and now they've taken it back in the form of raising our parking fee. I currently found a new job and I put my two weeks in for the first. They complain they can never find help because everyone quits, even though there are already 20 applications they refuse to…
Just a random thought. But lets say there was a website (no I'm not looking at building one) where past staff could post work conditions (yeah like glassdoor). But people posted/obtained (obviously legal information) of whether the company provide staff annual leave, recreational leave. Or text with managers (not internal/secure/privacy stuff) but stuff like a manager pushing you to work the day of a family death. And whether they allow unions or bust them. If it was all collated in the one place, would you use it to change your shopping? My thinking is we basically have something similar here, text of managers/companies, managers being racist, or ones claiming they are open, but obvious attack unions. What would happen if you could search “starbucks” or “amazon” and see that they've been fined union busting. They were racist at a staff member, or they time delivery drivers pee time. Would it…
I almost laughed at this
something like 'reasonable overtime may be required from time to time, in accordance with the needs of the business'.
Severe ADHD and work.
Hey there. I am 30 years old now but I have always wanted to ask someone about this. I have bad ADHD and have tried medication to no avail. Was on Ritalin growing up till 9. I Have had many jobs in my life but I was never fired I just quit form being “over stimulated.” I would honestly not know how to do anything right and when the manager talks to me it's almost like my head is a radio and the antenna does not catch what he/she is saying and I end up messing up a lot. Was made fun of a lot especially in my first job at Target. I would not be able to stock the aisles quick enough and would have trouble finding the places to put things and it would take me to long. This continued all the way till now. Each year I…
Rich people have never unionsed.
Rich people are often angry, about paying paid workers more. I worked for a company, the owner was earning £70k yearly, and drove a nice car and lived in a three bedroom attached house that is worth £100 something k or more. I was denied a raise at work, and I was denied a inflation pay raise the business owner did not know inflation pay raise existed. The firm is a medium sized firm in the town, I worked in the real estate company.
Time spent
I’ve only worked 2 1/2 yrs in this prison. I mean profession. I woke up this morning still having nightmares about going back to work. Stressfully running around. My boss on my case. Just general panic/anxiety. I don’t know if it’s because I’m an introvert… but I’ve worked 11 yrs of my life. I’ve pulled 12hr shifts, 16hrs, night shifts, overtime… to get to where I want to be: have a home, food and just enjoy life. So, why do I have to keep working to maintain this? Isn’t 11yrs enough!? People scoff and say they’ve been working for 30-40 yrs. That “it doesn’t feel like work if you enjoy it” Have I just not found the “joy” of working for our community yet?
