Background: I have been at my job for 4 years. At the beginning my job was amazing. Then the pandemic hit and something shifted at work. The owner realized that people were too afraid to lose their jobs. He began to push boundaries, being rude and sometimes down right cruel. I still remember the day an ex-coworker came in super sad and told him he won't be coming into work for a week as his mother was in another country dying and he couldn't see her in her death bed because the borders were closed at the time. The man was distraught and couldn't handle working as he was too sad. My boss literally spent the next 10 minutes telling this guy that he was inconveniencing the company and that his mom was going to die anyway, he might as well make some money as him sitting at home will…

Trickle up economics
It might not be enough to just unionize all of the places, when large corporations seem willing to close down certain locations than to bargain fairly with their collective workers. Maybe it's time we simply seize the assets for ourselves, and not hand over the profits of our labor to those who would see us on the brink of starvation and homelessness our entire lives. Mutiny.
I have different priorities
Have an “interview” with an employment agency later and they want two supervisor references. I don't actually know if my past supervisors still work at those companies. We're not friends. We don't keep in touch. I might be able to find them on LinkedIn but won't have current phone numbers. Also, if I were a supervisor I'd be pissed that someone is giving out my phone number. The last time I had one of these “interviews” they said I wanted too much money, so it might be a waste of time anyway. I understand the point of asking for references, I just don't know if it's still a realistic expectation to have people provide them.
We had a visit from all the “important” managers yesterday—really just one of those checkups where they try to catch you doing something wrong—and at one point the HR lady went around to everyone and told us about the pizza she brought for the employees that she had left in the breakroom. Yes, PizzaIsNotEnough, but this pizza was from a locally famous pizza place and we were all looking forward to having some on our breaks. By the the time anyone got a break, there was no pizza or pizza boxes in the breakroom. Front of the house staff confirmed that our District Manager TOOK ALL OF IT (4-5 boxes) when he left. He makes 250k a year and he stole the only little thing we were looking forward to that day.
