Month: July 2022
About two years into employment with my current company (I’ve been there 3 years now) my boss started making comments about how he wasn’t getting promoted. He had zero technical or people skills but was an IT Director. He was there 30 years and felt entitled. I told him about LinkedIn and how it could help him find a new job quickly. I helped him brush up on his résumé and create a LinkedIn profile. My coworkers were wondering why I was having so many meetings with him (we hated each other) and I blew it off as me having a one on ones with him but I was really helping him find a new job. Fast forward about six or nine months, he turned in his two week notice, and was walked out the same day. My team and I received a new Director and we’ve never been happier…
Work question
I work in sales. One of my dearest friends recently decided to leave the company. We were best friends and we were both the top performers at the company. I thoroughly enjoyed his presence and companionship and him being there was a way for me to deal with the toxic nature of the work environment. Our direct manager was an extremely toxic force to the team, lacking experience in sales and also treating team members unfairly. She would nit pick about break times and pick on us, whilst allowing the poor performers on the team to slack. For example, we are allowed a 1 hour break each day and she would call us up if we exceeded that if only by a few minutes, whilst the poor performers were often taking 2-3 hours extra on break time. Nothing was done about this even when it was brought to her attention.…
So I was supposed to work at my part-time retail job this morning but I was really sick and decided I should probably go to the ER (chest pain, vomiting). So I call the store first thing this morning, and my manager replies “oh… God. Well can you get me a doctors note please?” To which I reply sure, no problem. She hangs up the phone. The kicker here is that it's my first time ever calling in sick at this job, it's for one day, and I'm not even getting paid for said sick day. And, to make things even better, in my province employers are not entitled to a medical note unless 3 or more consecutive days are missed. I went to the hospital anyway so getting a note was no problem, but I know for a fact that she does not ask for a doctors note from…
So who does it go to then ?
I work at a fast food franchise. Not going to say which one because some of my coworkers are on reddit. But I fractured part of my hand working on fryers two days ago. Had a day off and noticed couldnt work my dominant hand anymore. No movement at all out of it without sharp pain. I called in and explained what was happening to my manager on duty. His response was “were short staffed today and we need you here. We will just put you on the register.” I just mentally checked out with that response and hung up. I tried contacting the franchise owner and explained to him that im going to the hospital for xrays. He said pretty much the same thing. If your able to come work part of your shift. The problem is my job requires me to use both hands lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.…
update to manager losing his mind
I came into work and preceded to talk about yesterday's outburst from him. He told me that it was nothing personal just business, when I pressed him on why he acted that way he told me “if I'm going to cause problems today I should just go home” so that's when I told him that he has no right to say that to me, and if happily call the union if need be. That quieted him down and then I hit him with it. “I'm just notifying you that I'm putting in my two weeks notice” I said firmly. He then gave me his sob story about how he's going through a divorce and that he needs to get this department up to standard otherwise he'll be fired and lose custody of his child. I explained to him, as well tragic as that is he shouldn't be taking it out…
We've had it on repair order and nothings being done about it and apparently it's not an OSHA violation so you know that's great.
Working a job you dislike just for the money is not good for you or your soul. I see a lot of jobs in the future being automated, but with people who actually enjoy specific jobs still doing them, even if they are 99% automated. I think there're jobs that aren't necessarily complex, but bring people enough joy that they don't want to give it up, and choose – as is their right – to do it to support themselves. Jobs like carpentry, for example, are jobs people are passionate about. They enjoy creating things like that and using their skills to do so. I do not think that should be looked down upon as something people merely do to slave away to survive. I think with the recent work walk-outs that the shift towards automation has significantly accelerated – and I think that's a good thing. What's important though,…
