Some info, I work at a Warehouse in California. Company wide, Labor Day is an off day and paid holiday , however at today’s morning meeting management said in an act to combat call offs anyone who does so will not be paid for Labor Day. Can they do this? What if I’m genuinely sick or an emergency comes up? What are your thoughts on this?

Don’t be late!
I am 28 and I hate seeing these “feel good” stories of 99 year old woman who works at Chic Fil A or the Burger King recruitment ad saying to come work for them when you are retired. But if I ever still have to keep working in my “retirement years” I'm just going to work from home. At least I don't have to commute, I can get 8 hours of sleep, don't have to wake up early, and I'm closer to my hobbies.
(This is my first job I’ve been at for a few weeks btw) Got a thing and asked for the day off for it a couple days ago, was declined so I asked for time of instead, that was approved so I called in to ask it after I’m done I should go to work to do the last of my shift (I would have only been an hour ish but I wasn’t sure what the plan was) Anyway I call and they say that I had to ask 3 weeks ago but I only knew about it like 6 days ago? If someone doesn’t cover my shift then I either have to put it off and go to work or not go to work and face “disciplinary action”. It does say in the contract o have to give 3 weeks advance knowledge but I didn’t know 3 weeks ago?…
