He was making about 1000$ a week salaried, they met with him and told him they weren’t aware he was brand new to this. And that he was gonna be transferred to a new floating position for about $25/hr. They called him later and said it would be best to just cut ties. Nothing in writing or email, he emailed them and got ghosted. What are my friends best options, should he file for unemployment? This is in MD btw.

How many red flags until you jump ship?
Strange things have been afoot in my office. It is expanding so rapidly, I started unconsciously missing red flags that it may not be what I thought. 1) A month ago, payroll direct deposit stopped. They said it was because we are switching providers. Then we got a direct deposit. 2) This week, we were told it was going to be a paper check again, but we were getting it on Wednesday before the holiday. Oh, but don't try to cash it before Friday… 3) Then notified that the rest of the paychecks this year will be paper as well. Neat! I'm all about the Old School Vibe. I hope they bring back Miami Vice, too! 4) Now, with everyone out of the office until next week, we got an email that employees at my level will be getting fines taken out of our paychecks for not completing paperwork for…
Question about Police Unions
I know police unions get a lot of flack, and I understand some of the reasons why they’re not great and can be (or just are) down right dangerous. I guess my question boils down to wanting other peoples insights and opinions on police unions, preferably with reasons beyond “ACAB”. It’s easy to throw that out as a reason, and it’s not wrong currently, but it hopefully won’t be like that for all of existence. I know a bit of labour history, I know cops in unions were doing union busting on behalf of whoever was hiring them. I know our current system of policing is built on racist ideals and laws, and I know currently the police system is not for the Everyman, but rather the ruling class. I like to try and think about the way things can be, and I honestly see police unions having a place…
Written up at work
I was written up the other day at work for calling out 8 times in a year. For background, I’m a nurse. We’re not supposed to come to work if we’re sick because we have a lot of immunocompromised patients. My boss basically said that if I call out again before the new year I will be terminated. I’m terrified of getting sick now because I will have no choice but to come in even if I’m really sick or have Covid or else I will be fired. When i had the meeting with my manager I told her that all of the times i’ve called out i’ve been sick (or needed a mental health day but I didn’t say that to her) and she said she understands that but I still can’t be calling out that many times. She claims my absences are “excessive” and my attendance really needs…

Paychecks bounce
Today I got notified by my bank that my paycheck bounced. I called coworkers and their checks also bounced. Many are now over drafted as we are already underpaid. We can’t call the company because it’s closed for thanksgiving weekend so we have to wait until Monday. They switched to paper checks 4+ months ago. It was supposed to be temporary as they switch over to a new clock in system. Meanwhile we were forced to use pto for a hurricane and they are on our ass about everything. I guess no Black Friday shopping for me now.
i work in fast food part time. in my country (australia) you are required to be paid for training. i was not paid for the 2 training shifts i did back in june. i don't have any records of having done these shifts, as i got a new phone and new phone number so none of the texts confirming my shifts are available to me. i estimate the two shifts were worth around ~80-100 AUD they don't pay for cafe training, which i do have a record of as it was stated in the company group chat. i checked the company policy and even the company states that you have to be paid for training, so it seems this is just a thing this store/franchisee is doing. i don't hate the restaurant manager here, and i don't really want her to get in trouble – which is the biggest reason…
Everyone knows his anti tipping speech but I just realized he was anti work all this time.
