College isn’t what I thought it would be

My parents have always told me “do good in high school, get accepted to a good college, get good grades in college, get a good job and work”. I did that. I did great in high school and am currently going to a decent college. I have a 3.75 GPA and I’m a third year. I’m an applied statistics and data analytics major. I’ve been applying to internships and have been rejected from 12-25 and the rest have not responded… yet? I feel like I’m going to end up graduating but not landing a job in the field I majored in… which is such BS. I worked hard all years of college and can’t even get an internship. And what am I really doing anyway by going to college? Taking classes to get a certificate that tells my employer I can do work competent enough for him/her. I will still…

Where would you go?

I’ve been addicted to videos on youtube of people that have moved out of the US to find a better, more sustainable life in another country. It’s often much cheaper and it often seems like a more reasonable way to live. If you could move to another country or city, where would you go? I’ll start – I’m seriously looking at Thailand. Cost of living is much lower, good infrastructure, healthcare is good but not bank-breaking, beautiful weather, good food, nice easy pace of living. I won’t mention the women since I’m married but there’s that too 🙂

Are there any good books or essays specifically addressing the idea of a “work ethic” critically?

I know of Weber's “The Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” as a seminal text…but I'm looking for more modern texts that specifically and critically analyse the idea of a “work ethic” as brainwashing tool of capitalist exploitation. To me it's one of the most insidious problems that keeps people from attaining class consciousness, I even see it in comments in this sub all the time…this idea that being a worker is inherently good and something to be proud of and encouraged, that to not work is immoral and lazy and freeloading, despite the fact that we have the means and technology to work radically fewer hours than we do, and that most of the work we actually do is specifically benefiting the capitalist class at our expense. So many workers have invested in the identity of being a “hard worker” and drank the capitalist koolaid without realising…

My manager blocked me from getting commission for a month over one mistake

I’ve been working at a membership based business for a little over two months now. The first month I was trained on the sales process maybe three times. For the month of October, my manager was gone for half of the month because her husbands brother died (not blaming her for this), but I had to learn how to do the job on my own. A month later, the very first I closed called to complain to my manager and lied over the phone that she didn’t know it was a month to month contract, when i specifically told her how much it was PER MONTH and her her sign a bunch of paperwork clearly stating it. My manager looked at the contract and there was one section of the 5 page contract that she forgot to initial. She had an employee evaluation review with me and told me my…

Thanksgiving convo

Me: I really think the unions are so important to enact change in working conditions and benefits Dad: Ehhh I think it’s not great and they’ll go on strike for the littlest things Me: I don’t think that’s true Dad: agree to disagree Me: How are employees supposed to stand up to corporations for any improvements? Dad: they can just leave the job if they don’t like it and find something else I just don’t understand that train of thought. The union is protecting workers and attempting to gain benefits for them. Someone who has worked at a job should just leave it if the company is corrupt and not attempt to change anything…… I just don’t get it.

(rant) I absolutely hate working

Basically what the title says. I'm 19 and I already dread working every single day. I work full time and live on my own so one missed bill means my life is over. I'm tired of it. I don't really have any ambition. I'm sure everyone would look down on me for saying this, but I'd honestly be content sitting in a dark room all day cuddling and playing videogames with my boyfriend. I hardly make enough to get by and things just are getting more expensive. I feel like I'm just living to pay bills. I'm always under financial stress, and I'm so terrified one day I won't be able to afford an expensive car fix, or a health emergency. Sorry, but this just sucks. Someone will say “lol that's what adulthood is all about” yeah I know and I hate it. And it won't end for at least…
