I do blue collar work and come from a blue collar family (well, from a working class family that became a welfare class family due to layoffs in the 90s). So even despite being in academia for a while, most people I've known are blue collar and working class types. But it's occurred to me that these people are mostly assholes. I don't know if they do blue collar work because they're assholes to begin with or if the blue collar lifestyle turns them into assholes, but they are what they are at this point. Just last night, right before New Year, some butthead of a former associate of mine sent me a nasty email, just to ruin my New Year. This is the level of small-minded viciousness that infects these people. They're developmentally stuck in adolescence, where their biggest concerns are looking like “tough guys” and “bad asses.” Working…
I don't hate my job, but know I can do something better. How long should I stay in my role so that I don't look like a 'job hopper'? Currently in my 9 year long career I'm on my 4th job. (UK if that makes any difference)
If anyone needs to know, this is happening in Michigan, USA. My car just got messed up and I have to have it towed to a mechanic tomorrow. I live a 25-30 minute drive from work, so obviously without a car I can't get there. Luckily, I'm set up to work from home when necessary. Unluckily, the company's new work from home policy states that they get to decide whether or not we are allowed to work from home on any specific day depending on if they “need” us. This decision is left entirely up to our manager, who I will call Kim. I'm being allowed to work from home tomorrow since I am the only member of my team that will be working, but Kim has already hinted strongly that she will be forcing me to use PTO for any additional time I will need. Other coworkers have been…
Fight for Forty. Hell yes I’m serious.
My boss removed my overtime hrs
I’m so angry that my boss has been removing my overtime hours. My clock in/out times vary so I always write my hours in my phone. I work 8 hr shifts. I asked my boss for a copy of my time sheet from my last pay period, so that I could compare it to what I’ve written. One day when I had to work by myself (it’s usually 2 people) I had 52 mins OT and I noticed on that day my boss changed my clock out time so that it only reflected 8 hrs. I’ve been very angry about this because he has no right to do that.
New minimum wage in CA as of today:
I worked in California for a company that unknowingly to me as they did not inform me nor have any paperwork informing me that my calls are all being recorded. Also, California is a two consent state in which I know they have no automation or policy informing the potential and existing clients they're being recorded. This company was extremely sketchy but I took it for a paycheck in between jobs. Can anyone here let me know if I have any case against them which I armchair googled and found no holes they could dig themselves out of. I even tried the main number just for confirmation as well and there is no notice.
I’m assuming the “nobody wants to work these days” quip wouldn’t have made any sense considering social systems like unemployment insurance didn’t exist..so what did the 1% say about us back then?
