To make a very long story somewhat short: I work as a theatre technician in PA. Up until January I worked for a performing arts school in the area on a 'P/T' W2 contract (29.75 hrs/wk, 52 weeks a year) as a carpenter/lighting tech. (If relevant, I quit because I got a better paying gig closer to where I live, after being snubbed for a F/T position with the school that I was certainly qualified for) The company offered “Additional Contracts” at flat rates ($650-$1000) on 1099 independent contractor agreements, to their P/T employees, to run the shows. These required anyone who opted to take them to work additional hours in the evenings/weekends on top of scheduled daytime hours. As it was a separate contract, we were not eligible to OT pay for combined hours. These contracts were posed as beneficial by management, as it allowed us to make additional…
Month: April 2023
So we had a crazy ass coworker who made our lives a living fucking hell and made it impossible to work in a healthy environment. This issue was brought up to management for 2 years because she would lash out at everyone for absolutely no reason. She accused people randomly for being racist even though no one has ever said racist shit there. You couldn’t whistle, click a pen, or touch/flip your hair because she would go ballistic. I finally had enough in November when she went batshit crazy, started slamming shit and calling everyone morons and “fucking idiots” because A GIRL FLIPPED HER HAIR WHILE LOOKING AT HER COMPUTER. The girl who took her place found this note today stashed away under the desk. We were all laughing at it and the lab director got furious and took it and said “THERE’S NO POINT IN REHASHING OLD RUMORS”. We…
Harlan County, USA on Hulu
Was happy to finally see this on a streaming service. If you haven’t seen it it’s an early 1970s documentary about mine workers joining the UMWA and going on strike. Sad to see these workers treated like such garbage by the mine company. Dangerous job and they were living in poverty.
Work requiring doctors note
So yesterday I ate something bad and was up with my stomach all night. I decided to call out of work but since I called out 5 hours before my shift instead of 6 I need to have a doctors note or I’ll basically be fired. It’s literally just a bad stomach ache. I don’t have the time or money to go bother a doctor for this. Is there any websites where I can get a free doctors note? I looked at online doctors and they all charge $25+
sorry for the long post. for context i live in michigan. so i just recently quit a job at a food service chain. i believe my location is technically a franchise, but the owners own at least 10 locations in i believe 3 different states (5 of them are within 10 miles of my location) and have a corporate style structure (GMs, RMs, an HR department, and owners). i’m adding this info because i’m not sure if the process/laws are different for franchise locations vs corporate locations vs a group of franchise locations owned by the same people. this job sucked for SO many reasons but some are more legally questionable (or outright illegal) than others. the worst one is the wage theft. in michigan minors are required to take a full 30 minute unpaid break if they work 5 hours or more, and there are no break requirements for…
I have lost my motivation
This isn't a post about anti rich, or ranting about changes that need to happen. My pay is ok, but will not be enough for me to retire ever, and I get to work from home. I just want advice to get my motivation back. In my currently job, I used to work 6-8 hours of the work day and grind out my work. However lately, its diminishing bit by bit each day. I am now only working 1-2 hours every day. I feel like I shouldn't be doing this and stealing from the company and I just get so demotivated to work. Id rather go do other things, but I can't because we all need the money. So I am just trapped in this depressing cycle. What's the point of working if I can't buy a house, what's the point of working if I can't afford kids, what's the…
Bathroom lighting timers at office job
Started a new office job and found out that every bathroom has a 5min lighting timer, and the sensor is around a corner and cannot be activated unless you leave the stall and walk around the corner. I'm absolutely flabbergasted! I literally have to turn on my cellphone light everyday to finish my business. Does anyone else deal with this at their job?
School requiring free labor
So, I'm a student going through a two year culinary program. I'm almost finished and will need to provide feedback for the school upon completion. The school constantly gets catering events added to the agenda and it takes away from our classroom work. I wish I would have kept a proper log of the amount of time, but hindsight blah blah. There's even an annual event that the school requires us to miss two consecutive weeks of school and put in 40+ hours of labor. We are asked to not work our regular jobs during those two weeks as well. I am a non traditional student, in my early 30s. I can financially budget for missing two weeks of work, but it's hard to believe the school isn't creating financial hardships for the younger students. They justify all the time spent doing the catering events by offering a Catering college…
Ive always been a very optimistic person. All of my jobs have been in the care field (elderly and kids) and have always been underpaid. But i always kept a good attitude and worked hard. My optimism was one of my best qualities. So I did what you were supposed to, I got a degree and kept working all throughout school. I finally graduated and cannot find a new job that pays more than i make right now. $15.60 an hour to work at a school, is what I do now. Today I reached my breaking point. I am all out of money. I had an unexpected vet bill that put me over. I feel like I am not the same person I have been. I am so defeated and Im struggling with it so hard. I feel like my optimism and can do attitude always kept me going and…
