I was in high school earning money as a maintenance man at the local McDonald’s. Early on I asked the manager if I could be trained on the grill. He said he would think about it and let me know. The next weekend I asked again and he said no I will keep you busy on maintenance. Fast forward to winter when we had an inch of snow and everyone called out except me and the manager. He looked at me and smiled and said fire up the grills! I told him I didn’t know how to. Hestopped and turned like they do in the movies when you’re about ready to shoot someone. He said “turn on the grills.” I reminded him I asked twice to be trained on the grills and he told me I didn’t need to be trained. He says “so you’re telling me we’re going to…
Month: May 2023
So, I worked temporarily for a national chain of stores that does maintenance and repair work. The first couple of days were awesome. I had a lunch break and I felt great coming back to work afterwards. Then the last three days, working a total of 10 hours a day, I was given no opportunity for any break of any kind, including a lunch. A little background for me, I have at least one (still valid) ASE certification and I have a bachelors degree from a major university in Economics. I couldn’t find a job in my economic field or similar so I decided to go back to what I started as and that was a technician. However, They didn’t hire me as an actual technician, they hired me as a lube technician. Mind you, I haven’t done this in over seven years and held jobs in those years that…
We love across the street from where I work, my wife came running crying bleeding from her downstairs, our two year old had a busted lip, she fell trying to catch him, I call 911 and management, ambulance comes takes my wife and son. Leaves me with my daughter, I call management, they say I can't close. I can't take a break to calm down, and no body can relieve me at the moment. While my family is in the hospital, and I have epilepsy, I'm stressing with my daughter at work. Remember money and profits. Over people.
I see posts all the time here showing how terrible the workforce is right now. It's depressing and it feels like the only way out is to leave the country. But what can we do about it? We can't leave our jobs but there must be things we can do besides suffer like this. Voting hasn't worked all these years and things have been getting worse no matter who our political leaders are. Besides protesting and striking what can we do? I've been trying to spend my money at good companies that have good practices and treat their employees well but that's all I can think of. I feel like its not gonna stop if we don't do anything.
I’m a minor working at a Chick-fil-A. This CFA is VERY busy, and almost never has slow times. I work in the kitchen and can do every station they need, but they mostly put me on breading because no one else knows how to do it. I’ll say that again, no one else (besides managers) know how to do breading besides me. I have asked them multiple times to train other people on the station, they deny my “request”. I also ALWAYS close for them (sometimes leaving after 11, which isn’t allowed because I’m a minor) even though I’m always scheduled to leave at 10pm. They gave me a 62/100 on my performance evaluation and said I could be “more flexible” with working other stations even though again, they always put me on breading. I asked for a raise since I’m the only one who does it every night…denied. Then…
Maybe you started off with nothing and no hand outs from mommy and daddy. But the second you start having a work force helping you make money, you’re no longer self made. /Rant
