401K match “up to a percentage” is pretty much the biggest insult ever

I completely understand that a lot of people whose scale of pay is higher than mine are worth more, but why does a higher income entitle their money to be LITERALLY worth more. On a 5% match: If I put away 15% of $1,000 ($150), I get a $50 match. If they put away 5% of 2,000 ($100), they get $100 match Why isn't there more yelling about this? Does anyone with better knowledge of the law know if it's a legal requirement for 401ks to be structured like this, or if some other company could come along and make waves by setting the limit to an amount instead of percentage. Cap the match of the higher earners a bit there by allowing the lower workers more of the budget… I haven't done the math, but with the amount of progressive companies that are shifting to better social responsibility to…

I’m so tired of endless corporate politics

For context I work at an entry level position for a global company. There’s so much corporate fluff added as barriers to keep people from making more money or getting promotions. I have the education and experience. I have quickly outperformed most others at my level, but it’s like pulling teeth asking for a raise or promotion! They’re requiring me to complete some BS online training that I already have many years of experience in plus a college education! I’m sick of being exploited like this but I’m so overworked and my schedule is so packed that I don’t have time/energy to hunt for a better job.

Recruiter dilemma

I work as a recruiter for a trucking company, and as of yesterday my department sent over an email saying if we have an application that has any of these companies listed in the last 10 years to not review the file and instead have leadership review. No reasons were given. The companies were UPS, YRC, USF Holland, New Penn or Cox petro. Im really bummed because i had a great conversation with an applicant who was supposed to come in for an interview today and I was told due to business needs dont extend an offer or even have the interview. The guy has nothing I could reasonably take him out for and we are actively hiring in the area. Im guessing it has to do with the recent strikes/unionizations happening. Is this legal, is there anything i could do without jeopardizing my job?

Fire me from my only source of income? Good luck watching your business crash and burn!

I got fired from my job at a very small business the other day and it was a fucking nightmare to be there. I stayed as long as I did because, unfortunately, we do need what jobs give us to live. My boss and I never got along. She’d make these totally batshit crazy statements, call me “disrespectful” because of my disability, and constantly compare me to the other coworkers or applicants who could have had my position to make me feel bad. Problem is, it’s such a small company that we didn’t have an HR. She was all that was there. I was the main graphic designer for this company. The other two coworkers knew how to do surface level graphic design, but I’m more of a professional in the field, so that was the majority of the tasks I was assigned. The day I got fired, I had…

But there’s a barbeque…. /s

Things are about to go pear-shaped at work. Big company, with a ridiculous number of levels of management. Multiple business units have been losing money. Turnover is huge. There's another friend leaving every month. The group president (3 levels above the building general manager) is in the building. All the managers are getting skip-level meetings. There's an off-site meeting with the group president and all the senior managers today. When I told my (off-site) manager, they said, “Oh, shit.” But HR said we're having a summer barbeque next week, so we have that going for us.

The SAG-WGA brand of “solidarity”

As someone who works in the film industry but as an IATSE member. It’s hard to feel for the writers and actors who are speaking up against “unfair labor conditions” and are calling for solidarity and support. When the last IATSE contract negotiations were up, just a few years ago, we authorized a strike. But there was no talk of solidarity from them; of striking in support of some of the truly working class jobs that are in this shiny turd of an industry.. all of the people I’ve worked alongside in IATSE are HURTING because of these shutdowns. But it’s the writers that the shutdown is targeting. The unions with strike support funds. The Writers on residuals on products they released into perpetuity. What about the sets that were built? They, just like your silly little one-liners, are still being used to produce revenue for these multi billion bill…

boyfriend was fired in the most disrespectful way possible

I’m sorry this post is going to be really long, I just need to rant and honestly need some vindication as well. Here’s some background info: my boyfriend works two jobs, one as a retail sales associate and another as a coach for a sport at a small local club specifically oriented around that sport. Last night he informed his boss at his coaching job that he wouldn’t be able to make it the next day because he had a shift at his other job, and his boss lost it. He immediately replied something to the effects of: Boss: Great! We don’t need you anymore. Thanks! We’ve only been losing kids since you started coming in. Keep in mind this guy is disorganized to a straight up disrespectful degree. He doesn’t post official schedules for his 3 coaches at the beginning of the week, just asks them the day before…

Retrospective on a college job

I just wanted to post a retrospective on an experience I had working in college. I was going to school for theatrical sound engineering at the time, and I was a top student in our small technical theatre program. One day the adjunct professor, I’ll call her Sam, invited me out for coffee. She said she had a great opportunity for me. She was the head sound engineer at a regional theatre near by, called Company A. However, Sam had gotten the awesome job opportunity to temporarily run sound for a bigger theatre in a nearby town, Company B, but she had made prior conflicting commitments to Company A to run around 40 shows. This includes running about 15 actors lav microphones, as well as many other various tasks like cleaning the mics after every show, checking speakers before every show, etc. Anyway, since she’d already committed to helping Company…
