goodbye, antiwork

I’ve been on the internet for a hot minute. And for most of that minute I avoided Reddit like the plague until antiwork sucked me in a couple of years ago. Finally, a forum that put words to feelings I’ve had for a long time. A large group of people that want to end the whole concept of work? Fuck yeah. Shortly after I joined, the Fox News fiasco happened and this sub grew faster than it could moderate itself and orient new joiners. Now it’s nothing more than another neoliberal circle jerk of brainwormed incrementalism and capitalist reformation and rehabilitation. It’s sad and pathetic. Anything even a fraction as radical as its own faq and resources is downvoted to hell. The majority of antiwork members have fully co-opted and diluted it beyond recognition where engagement only happens on “pwease mr. boss make my chains a widdle bit longer” content.…

Hard lesson

It's taken me a LONG time to get to where I am now. The TL;DR version is that I went through a severely traumatic upbringing dealing with gangs, murders, multiple forms of abuse, etc. Understandably this continues the cycle, because such behavior is normalized. I never became the monsters I was surrounded with, but the PTSD is alive and well. So I was in my mid 20s before I was actually in a not abusive relationship and didn't have to ask permission to work. I wish I was joking. This means I'm behind as fuck when it comes to navigating office politics. Through my years in retail, I learned not to be so reliable, because people will take advantage. It took a long time for me to let go of the extreme high standards of work ethic and allow myself to be a person. I learned that the better you…

Getting a new job and gave resignation notice. Got threatened with no call/ no show because I gave some of my remaining shifts to a coworker.

I gave my formal resignation last week because I got a new job. Zero response for over a week and then was told “ I acknowledge receipt of your message and you are training new hire next shift”. I already traded that shift to another coworker and made other plans. Supervisor calls me saying I have to show up because I didn’t get approval and it wouldn’t have been approved anyway. I apologized if I didn’t follow protocol but I found coverage and I will not be there. Supervisor says it’s a safety hazard for someone to work an extra shift. In reality company is just against paying overtime. The call started very aggressive about it’s a privilege to be able to work and I have a responsibility. Threatened with a no call/ no show and write up if I don’t show up. I started to laugh because I remind…

Old manager messaging me trying to flirt a year after I left on bad terms.

So I left a job over a year ago. Was super toxic. When I first got hired they hired two other people who literally left after a day so it just happened to be me and my manager who also happened to be his first time being a manager and boy did he suck at it. Anyway I dealt with so much bullshit at that place. Both managers used to gaslight me about anything to the point I started recording interactions and phone calls with them. So I find another job who was paying 25 an hour and wanted me to start immediately so I gave my shifts to other workers. Well the worker forgot to cover my shift and I got yelled at for it and fired. I honestly could of probably fought it considering I did have the texts as proof but being they were treating me so…

HR really just does not care if they screw over employees

Just wow. I never thought it could happen at my company because we’re so small and have a great group, but wow HR sure doesn’t care about screwing over their employees. I’m a manager who recently had to provide an annual performance review for one of the employees – her first one. It went really well and everyone was happy. The employee asked about a raise and I said, while that decision is made by HR, I can tell you it’s typically between 3-5% depending on your performance. The employee understood. Keep in mind, this employee received a 5% increase after her first 90 days because she was doing such a great job which is unheard of at my company, but they really appreciated all she has done. Well, when I went to discuss the merit increase with HR they were definitely lowballing the number because of that 5% increase…
