HR really just does not care if they screw over employees

Just wow. I never thought it could happen at my company because we’re so small and have a great group, but wow HR sure doesn’t care about screwing over their employees. I’m a manager who recently had to provide an annual performance review for one of the employees – her first one. It went really well and everyone was happy. The employee asked about a raise and I said, while that decision is made by HR, I can tell you it’s typically between 3-5% depending on your performance. The employee understood. Keep in mind, this employee received a 5% increase after her first 90 days because she was doing such a great job which is unheard of at my company, but they really appreciated all she has done. Well, when I went to discuss the merit increase with HR they were definitely lowballing the number because of that 5% increase…

Well, when I went to discuss the merit increase with HR they were definitely lowballing the number because of that 5% increase this employee already received. With that being said, I was able to fight for her to get a 4% raise which I thought was fair all things considered (previous 5% raise, three weeks PTO, additional allowances for working in office vs. remote, etc.).

The employee, however, was extremely upset. I’ve never seen her act this way and it was borderline unprofessional. I tried to calm her down and explain their rationale. She is certainly the strongest employee we have, but she was looking for about a 15% raise so even if she got 5% she would have been unhappy.

Well, I shared this with HR, and they literally could care less that one of their employees was hysterical crying on the way home from the office?? Like wtf. I was told to just ignore the complaining.

What. Is. Wrong. With. People.
