1988 Life was plentiful!

1988 The year my parents first bought a house. I was 9 years old and thought I lived in luxury! My mom worked at a bank and made 5$ an hour, which was 25 cents over minimum wage, and my dad worked at the local grocery store making just 50 cents more than my mom at 5.50$ an hour. My parents never struggled to make a living in life. They just purchased their first home at $28,600 USD for a 3 bedroom 2,000 square foot home. Both had their own vehicle that cost $2,500. Gas price was just a little over 60 cents a gallon. Not to mention they also had a cabin for the summer time where I would feed the wild life, hike with friends, and play video games in a open glass room that looked over a hill side that you could see forest tree tops for…

Is it just me or is working for government just so much better than working in the private sector?

I work for a historical agency for my state where we manage historic sites. I’m basically a park ranger. I’ve also worked for the US forest service and it’s also pretty damn awesome. When I worked for the private sector the work environment was always much more toxic as the boss is always coming around to crack their whip on the rest of us. In my line of work you have your basic duties and bigger projects and you just prioritize accordingly. You do your job in a reasonable time, do a decent job and nobody bothers you for the most part. I know that the private sector generally pays better, but most government jobs pay pretty good imo. My opinion is skewed because I’ve spent most of my life poor so maybe take what I say with a grain of salt.

General Rent Strike

Question for all people currently renting property. If we were to start a general rent strike, everyone stops paying their landlords rent, say on January 1st 2024… you know… “hypothetically” would you participate? On the condition that the money is saved for repairs to the house and utilities that you'd then be on the hook for. Unless it's like your friend renting a room out to you or something like that. If you have a landlord who lives in another building, or especially another state, would you just tell them to eat shit if everyone else did the same?
